Something a little lighter this time.
Let’s talk about Jasper’s affinity for bunnies. I don’t know when it started. Maybe when he was around six and he lost his incisors. Every single photo he took looked like this — bunny teeth.
Maybe it started with this encounter.
Listen, I’m not going into a whole essay into the meaning of bunnies, what bunnies mean to Jasper, why bunnies, animal metaphors, any of that. I’m simply observing, without analysis: look, a bunny.
At his request, one of his birthday cakes was this red velvet bunny.
There was that time he selected a pastel tie-dye bunny at the Build-a-Bear workshop instead of a dumb bear.
Here is his favorite mug for many years. It’s Gleno from the Ugly Doll line, which I think we can all agree is very bunny like. In this photo Ashwin is drinking from it, which was highly unusual. We all recognized it as Jasper’s mug, the mug only he uses, the mug I saw hundreds of times on his desk in front of his monitor. I don’t know what became of this mug. It was with us for at least 10 years.
Years went by and I lost sight of the bunny. But then I noticed it resurface in Jasper’s tags (often spelled “Jesr”). So much of art is about experimentation and iteration.
You could make a case that these are cats. But I know what I’m seeing here.
We miss Jasper so much. Glad you are writing about him.
This made me smile! I was very hoppy to read it, heh heh.
